Japan Envy: My Melody x Felyne

It's no secret that I'm enamored with the Monster Hunter series mascot Felyne. Admittedly, I have yet to actually play a Monster Hunter game (though I do own one), but I most certainly keep my eye out for all things Felyne. Cute is my calling, after all!

So when I saw Sanrio announced that they would be producing a special line of My Melody and Felyne merchandise that will hit Japanese stores starting in August, how could I not be excited? I mean, look at these designs:

I have to say I've never been a huge fan of Kuromi (the back and white one), but man, those pink and brown critters are to die for. I particularly like the left design, which is a Felyne dressed up as My Melody, if you're wondering. I'm not sure what it is about animals wearing other animal's faces that is so endearing, but believe me, I am sold.

Monster Hunter Diary G already had some My Melody downloadable content last year, so this crossover is by no means a surprise. Now, however, legions of men, women, and children across Japan will be able to purchase Felyne and My Melody in the form of accessories, clothing, stationary, and probably just about anything you can imagine. For an idea of what the goods will look like, check out this Hello Kitty x Felyne series that ran last year:

It's good that I'm learning about this so far in advance... I'll have plenty of time to arrange how I'm going to get my hands on a Felyne x My Melody plush!

Do any of these designs tickle your fancy?

Oh Anne, you gotta play some Monster Hunter! Felyne's are even cuter in game. They cook you things and distract enemies for you.

I'm pretty enamoured with the giant pupils of the cat on the far right. Looks very cute and derpy.

Cook things and distract enemies for you?! Oh boy! I've got a copy of Freedom Unite right here... Gotta get to it soon! From what I've heard so far, the game does seem a little daunting... Which Monster Hunter games have you played? Any tips for a beginner?

And I didn't notice the right one's eyes! They are SO derpy!

Recently, Sanyo did some Hello Kitty x Muppets crossover figures, and they were just SO CUTE! Alas, I had no money with which to buy....

Jennifer - Hello Kitty x Muppets?! Now that sound awesome! I bet it was for a limited time though, right? What a shame...

I've only played the MH games on the PSP. From what I've heard though the Wii one is the best because of decent camera control. If you want to play MH on PSP properly, you need to adapt this awkward claw grip to rotate the camera and move at the same time. It's not good at all :(

It's very daunting to start off, and most of your time playing will be spent collecting materials to make stuff. but Freedom Unite is where I started and the Felyne helper in battle distracts enemies for you, which is invaluable. They look pretty adorable too. It's very difficult to recommended though because the camera REALLY is unbearable to work with.

As for tips? The farm you have is super handy and essential if you want to cut down on material hunting. Upgrade it lots and plant everything you can find in the soil, fish there regularly, mine everything you see etc etc. Monster Hunter is one of those games where almost every item you pick up will be used at some point further down the line, so it's good to keep things. You'll have a veritable treasure trove of items in your item box :p

And if you do get the chance, play multiplayer. The game really shines if you can play multiplayer. Cuts down on a lot of the material hunting tedium and combat is pretty difficult by yourself. Not impossible, just tough.

Anyway, I now have to find Felyne wallpaper for my laptop :p

Oh, man, I LOVE this kind of thing! I'm a total sucker for cute things :P Also, I really like the Felyne characters--especially the overly cute ones from the MH spin-off series. I'm still mad that Capcom didn't bring those titles to the States :( Anyway, I particularly like the Felyne dressed in pink (not sure which My Melody character it's dressed as...).

The designs are pretty creative. Just another example of how cute sells.

Hey Bryan! I knew you'd love this. Great minds think alike, as they say! ;) I'm totally enamoured with the spin-off series Felnye designs you're talking about, too!

The pink, bunny-eared character is the My Melody namesake herself... My Melody! Actually, I don't know if there are any other My Melody characters either than My Melody and Kuromi, come to think of it. Or they might be considered two different "series," I'm not sure... It's a bit confusing.

You're right, Motherplayer, cute most certainly sells. In fact, I'd buy it all!

Thanks for the education RE: My Melody, Anne. I've always thought that little character was cute, but for some reason I never knew her (??) name.
