Gratuitous Animal Crossing 3DS LL/XL Photo Shoot

Guess what came in the mail today?

That's right, the limited edition Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3DS LL! I'm sure those of you following me on Twitter have already heard, and others may have guessed after my hints in previous Animal Crossing: New Leaf posts, but I was dead set on preordering one of these puppies as soon as they were announced. But enough with the pleasantries. On to the pictures!

Just some shots and details of the lovely, colorful box. Please excuse any graininess in these photos... It's times like these that make me really wish for a fancy camera!

The box is actually a lot thinner than I expected, and has an interesting matte finish on the cardboard that makes it quite nice to the touch! I should've put something in so you could gauge the size of the box, but I imagine it's only about an inch and a half thick.

I just love the attention to detail Nintendo always puts into their products. Simple flourishes like characters adorning the side of the box really add to the whole package, don't you think? It reminds me a lot of Nintendo's gorgeous Japanese Game Boy Advance boxes. I like the Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3DS LL box so much that I'll definitely be displaying it on my shelf... Next to my GBA Micro box, of course.

The unit itself! I know I made a big fuss about how I really wanted the Pikachu Yellow 3DS LL back when it was announced for Japan, but I'm actually happy that I didn't end up getting it, as I think this one has a much more timeless, classy feel. And yes, I've heard the comparisons of it to a Luis Vuitton pattern... I definitely can see where some people might think they look similar, but for me the similarity isn't the heart of its appeal at all (I literally have zero interest in Luis Vuitton, for starters).

Well, suffice it to say... I just love it! The inside looks just like a regular white Japanese 3DS LL (or the new pink x white model), and admittedly it'll take some getting used to as my first white console, but I'm really happy with it. I should take this opportunity to give a special thanks to my husband, who let me go ahead with the exorbitantly expensive preorder and open it today as an early birthday present... What a sweetie! I don't think many birthday presents top an Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3DS LL.

Since the game itself comes on the SD card, it's a little jarring to open the system up and have a big empty slot, I must admit! I'll probably stick a DS game in there just so I don't have a mild heart attack every time I open it, momentarily forgetting that Animal Crossing: New Leaf isn't on a cartridge. Right now that's the only Japanese 3DS game I have, but I have a feeling it'll keep me busy for a while... That and all the eShop games and demos, of course! I was pleasantly surprised when I booted up the eShop to find a newly-released demo for the upcoming Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Magna Gate and the Infinite Labyrinth. Of course, I'll definitely have to give Bravely Default: Flying Fairy a shot, as well!

Expect a post on Animal Crossing: New Leaf in the very near future! In the meantime, feel free to ask any questions about the game in the comments, and follow me on Twitter or Tumblr for lots of image dumps courtesy of the game's new screenshot feature.

My god - that is lovely. I wish I could pick one up but I really need a UK console for Monster Hunter.

Why did they make the 3DS region locked again? :(

Hey Anne, sorry I haven't been reading your blog and leaving you comments so much lately. Been busy busy busy and ill ill ill! I've had quite a bad cold lately and all I wanted to do was just watch anime all day, but it's all good because I watched a really good series called Guilty Crown! If you haven't seen it, it's totally worth a watch in my opinion.

So you finally got the incredibly cute Animal Crossing DS, 'ey? ;). Question: Are the graphics on the XL any better than previous DS's?

So how are you finding the new Animal Crossing then, Anne? Exciting? I loved Animal Crossing Wild World, I got so addicted to it for a while but then my game data got corrupted and I gave up! :'(. And so came the end to a beautiful era.

OMG you are soooo lucky!!!
I wish I could buy one too :(
But I'll get the yellow Pikachu-3DS LL as soon as it hits there stores here in Germany.
Even if yours is way better... I love Animal Crossing so much D:

Oh, Anne, it's beeeeeaauuuuuutiful! And not just the system, but the box, too. Honestly, if I'd gone through with my decision to buy one, I'd be sleeping with mine right now. Well, not in "that way," of course, but you know what I mean :)

Anyway, thank you for sharing these photos. I look forward to hearing what you think of the game, and also hearing what you think of the LL in relation to the OG 3DS...

Hey Anne, guess what?
I just checked Amazon and the Pikachu 3DW LL is now available for preorder! I preordered it one Second ago! :D

Goodbye world!

I'm always stealing glances at it and rubbing the box (its matte finish was an interesting surprise), haha.

So far I'm really enjoying the bigger screen, though it is true that you can notice a slight deterioration of the quality of the image. I think the benefits far outweigh the negatives, though! Now I know what people mean about it being difficult to go back to the OG...

apricotsushi said...

Yay!! I'm so happy for you!!

apricotsushi said...

No, unfortunately the game hasn't even been announced for release outside of Japan yet! I'm sure it will be, though, and that they'll bring the demo over eventually

I know what you mean, Michelle! I hate that the 3DS is region locked :( Now I've got both a US one and a Japanese one, and since I live in Australia I'll probably want a PAL one at some point... But that's just excessive!

No worries! I'm sorry to hear you've been busy and sick. Sounds a lot like me, actually! I'm just getting over the flu myself.

I've vaguely heard of Guilty Crown, but if you recommend it, I'll definitely have to look more into it!

Graphics-wise, I don't think the XL is any better than the previous DS's. Everything looks great on the bigger screen, but you do notice some jagged edges a little bit more, since it's the same resolution as the 3DS, just blown up bigger. Honestly, it's not that noticeable, though!

I'm enjoying Animal Crossing a lot so far, but I must admit I'm not very far! I only just got some of the essentials like the bug net and the shovel (still no fishing rod, Nook's didn't have one in stock today...). It definitely feels bigger and more fleshed-out than any of the previous titles in the series.

That's horrible about your Wild World save, by the way :( Do you know what happened?

thegaygamer.com said...

Ha ha! I'd do the same, Anne. In fact, I'd probably threaten to sleep with the system (no, not in *that* way) if I actually owned one :)

As for the difference between the OG and LL/XL 3DSes: If you had an OG and LL/XL from the same region, would you always go with the LL/XL at this point, or can you imagine instances when you'd go for the OG?

Strange question, I know, and one I'll be able to answer myself in a few weeks (pink and white!!!), but I'm still curious as to your answer (if you're willing to share one).

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh my gosh, I can't believe I said twice that I'd sleep with this 3DS if I owned one. I'm going to blame it on one too many glasses of wine with dinner...

I can't remember, I may have known what the problem was at the time but it was so long ago since I last played it! I had a huge house and everything aha. Despite my frustration, Animal Crossing is definately one of my favourite DS games.

So on the new one, is there a lot more to do? More tasks, more critters to make friends with, more items to collect etc.? Also has the world changed at all / is it completely brand new?

apricotsushi said...

Haha I just figured you were very enthusiastic, Bryan!

Honestly the only reason I can think of returning to the OG (besides necessity, since I don't have a NA XL yet!) would be for the portability... The XL is just a tad too bigger than I like carrying around, a bit like the Vita. Either than that... Honestly, it's a bit sad to go back to the OG, because it just feels like the "lesser" version now. I think I really like the white inside, actually! I'm surprised by how much like prefer it to black.

thegaygamer.com said...

Oh, that's great to hear, Anne. I should've guessed about the 'it's a bit too big' part. I imagine that'll come up with me, too, after I get my pink-and-white XL, as I like to take my OG 3DS to the store, etc., with me, but I have a feeling the XL will be too big for that. Oh, well, another reason to hold on to the OG, right?

Also, I'm glad to hear you're liking the white interior! I always thought Nintendo's chatter about black vs. white interiors was a bit fishy...

There is definitely a *ton* more to do compared with the DS version! There are brand new townspeople –– I believe there's something like 300+ different people available to live in your town, now! Not all at once, of course... I think the max is 10 or 12. There are lots of new items, and being mayor gives you all sorts of options to build and customize... You can add bridges or build a camp site for wandering travelers to come visit, for example.

The island is also a great new feature! You can go there and catch all kinds of new bugs, fish, and harvest different fruit. You can go swimming, too, which is a lot of fun! Then you can go work in Brewster's cafe, too... Well I haven't unlocked nearly everything yet, and there's a lot more I haven't mentioned, so suffice it to say it's probably at least twice as big as Wild World was! I definitely think you'll enjoy it :)

Wanna exchange friend codes?
And gosh, I wish they'd release that 3DS in Europe..

Hi Tymek! I'd be happy to exchange codes. Mine's 2594-9844-2715. Are you playing Animal Crossing?

I'm interested in getting this myself, but I just wanted to ask whether the DS itself is all in Japanese. Or is there a way to make it English.
Thanks :)
