Animal Crossing: New Leaf QR Code Extravaganza

I mentioned in my last Memos from Mamemura post that I'd rekindled my love for Animal Crossing: New Leaf after a bit of a slump over the holidays, and let me tell you, I am 100% back down the rabbit hole. What could be responsible? Well, for one, I've discovered the realm of "My Design" blogs!

An old-school Dragon Quest-themed town!?
They even have tiles for towns and castles! (source)
My Design, of course, refers to the ability to make custom patterns for everything from shirts to sign posts in Animal Crossing: New Leaf and share them via QR codes. There are literally hundreds of talented people all over the internet creating all manner of amazing and adorable things! It's hard not to be impressed by the sheer talent these people possess. Here are a few of my favorites so far:

Adorable, and very pink! (source)
Look at the detail they've put into the scarf and camera! (source)
This is just perfect for Valentine's Day (source)
So many gorgeous dress designs! (source)
The creator of this one did both the lace pattern and dress! (source)
These Ghibli-inspired designs go wonderfully with the mushroom furniture (source)
There really are so many amazing blogs and sites; it would be impossible to list all of them here. But, for the curious, I highly advise going to this page that catalogs the highest-ranked Animal Crossing: New Leaf My Design blogs and check out some of the top hits! Alternatively, this site is chock-full of links to anime/game-related My Designs.

Unfortunately, it's hard to say whether or not these  will be compatible with the English release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The Gay Gamer tells me Denpa Men QR codes made in Japan were not compatible with other regions, which is a little disheartening, but hopefully Nintendo realizes the importance of players being able to share their creations and doesn't restrict QR code recognition to copies of the game from the same region. But, even if they aren't compatible, I have no doubt an ample English QR community will arise with just as much talent as the Japanese one! We'll just have to wait and see...

Note: I have not posted any QR codes here because most Japanese bloggers specifically request that their QR codes not be shared on other sites. If you're interested in getting the QR codes for use in your copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, please go to the source links under the images!

Hey Anne, long time no speak! These are some nice custom designs you found; I especially like the Totoro bed spread and the mushroomy furniture, very cute indeed! T'is a shame they won't be available for download on the Western version *sigh*. Surely there'll be some Westerners making their own designs though? So hopefully we will see some pretty decent stuff at least!

P.S. How's life Anne?

My god some of these (OK, ALL of these) are GORGEOUS! Seriously, if the North American version of New Leaf doesn't allow folks to use/scan Japanese QR codes, I'm buying the Japanese version of New Leaf, too, as I can't live without some of these creations.

As for whether or not that's going to happen (Nintendo allowing New Leaf players from all regions to access each others' QR codes): I honestly don't know what to think at this point. Like you pointed out, QR codes for The 'Denpa' Men can only be used by folks from the same region, so that's a bad bit of news. That said, 'Denpa' technically isn't a Nintendo game, so maybe we shouldn't use it as precedent?

Anyway, it's recently become clear to me that I'm going to need to buy two copies of this game--so I can make both a boy and girl character. I have a feeling the girl character will be my main one and the boy will just be secondary, but who knows?

BTW, Anne, are you planning to pick up a copy of the North American version, too, or are you sticking with just the Japanese version?

Hi Billy! I agree, the Totoro stuff is downright adorable.

As for whether or not these will work with western versions of the game, I'm not sure, but there definitely is the possibility that they won't. Certainly there are some equally talented English speakers that will create great things and share them for the western release, too, though!

Hmmm life for me is good, but busy! I'm very stressed about my PhD stuff these days. Luckily gaming and blogging is always a good stress reliever :) How about you?

It's very important to have yourself some down time Anne to release the stress a lil, so bash those buttons I say! Hope all goes well with your "PhD stuff" Anne, I'm rooting for you! And if all does go well, I'll take you out for dinner on New Leaf when the Western version is released! Ehehe :D.

Do me proud Anne, do me proud!

Update sur le vie de moi: My life is pretty great at the mo thanks, although there was some recent sadness as one of my best friends in my main friend group has gone away for 2 years on a mission (as he is a Mormon)! So that was quite saddening - feels so strange without him. On the plus side, this has made some of us closer and I have formed stronger bonds within the group. We were all very close before as we hang out often, but now even more so!

As for the vlogging stuff, I did an unboxing of "Ni No Kuni Wizards Edition" which Bryan Ochalla has already seen as I have been talking to him recently via his site. I filmed it in full HD with my new video SLR camera but I mucked up some settings in the editing process and it came out at 480p (which is still very watchable). When I get the time, I shall do a review on the game and I will make it as fun and informative as possible! If you wish to see the unboxing, link below.

I watched your video, and I have to say, it looks great! I enjoyed your commentary and it was much easier to hear you than your first video. I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions in a future video :)

As for your friend going on a mission – that's sad to hear you won't be able to see them for 2 years, but on the other hand its good that you have such a close-knit group of friends! I'm sure he will be back in no time.

You know, you could always make a second character in the same village, right? Or do you want two entirely separate worlds for the characters? ;)

And I think we already spoke a bit about whether or not I was going to pick up another copy on the podcast, but suffice it to say I'm on the fence about that at the moment. I'd definitely like to be able to compare the original to the translation, though!

AHH DRAGON QUEST AHHHHH

Thankyou for the kind words Anne, much appreciated! Hopefully I'll have a mini review up for you to see this week. I hope to cover a lot of ground and cast aside any uncertanties that traditional RPG fans (and Studio Ghibli fans) may have.

Wow! These are gorgeous! I *do* hope that since you can visit other people's towns who are all over the world that there would be *some* way to get patterns even if not with the QR codes. I know I really want the Dragon Quest ones so I can possibly find a town flag or some such. Although I'm not 100%. I usually theme my town after Sentai/Power Rangers so I might continue that but that doesn't mean I won't have a section dedicated to other things I love.

Actually, it's just been confirmed that QR codes will work cross-region! http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/nintendo-confirms-animal-crossing-new-leaf-qr-codes-work-across-regions/

And a sentai-themed town? That sounds pretty awesome! Are you a Kamen Raider fan? There are a whole bunch of My Designs from Kamen Raider cataloged here: http://en.doubutsu.qr-matome.info/tag/Kamen%20Rider

I am a Kamen Rider fan! I will check out the site! Thank you for the resource!

Oh!
You can have 2 villagers in the same town?
(Ima noob :3)
Do you just start a new game?

apricotsushi said...

Hi Toto! Sorry for the late reply. You can have two villagers in the same town without restarting. There should be an option on the main menu! Only the first villager can be the mayor, though.
